Is old school odo tampering even possible on a car with a digital odo?

Can you even roll back an electronic odometer? Or can you and I'm an idiot?

I'm pretty sure it isn't possible, now that you can't really stick the wire down the back and roll it back.

It's probably not possible, you can disconnect it. But not roll it back.

Then if the last CarFax reading was 134,xxx, that's what would show up on the odometer, no?
It's a trashy Caddy, but I dunno if it's a scam.

I'm just guessing that he's angry that people keep thinking he rolled the ODO back or something like that so he's just decided that he is going to reveal his true emotions and feelings about Florida and everybody who lives there.

In most modern cars, the odometer mileage is actually stored in the cluster believe it or not, NOT the ecu. That way if the computer is replaced or completely re-written (both of which happen often), the mileage isn't affected. In comparison, cluster electronics are rarely touched. Even if a gauge fails, just the gauge gets replaced. If this is a case of mileage not matching, the dash was probably changed out to do it.

Just my .02 but I know on a lot of cars around the 2000's you could swap out the instrument cluster and the recorded mileage would follow. Got a 98 Corolla with 177xxx? Pull a junkyard cluster with 70xxx, swap and bam, resale value through the roof

My friend was telling me about some Mexican guy that can "roll back for you". I asked how he did it and he said he hooks up a computer to it. Not sure if I believe him but I guess anything is possible.

You will have to hack it with a computer

I heard you can hack the ECU or Trip Comupter, but it pretty hard

I think this is just an APSA: Angry Public Service Announcement.

Perhaps the value is stored in the ECU and you'd have to switch ECUs to roll back the mileage nowadays?

It is possible. Very popular with cars in southern California and cars from floods (i. e. Hurricane Katrina). I don't know the specifics of how it is done but I know It is a big problem. Something to do with CAN blockers. Mercedes has trained some of us to spot and prove mileage tampering in order to prevent warranty fraud, or notify the authorities of crime. The problem is that by the time I see tampered cars they have been sold to an unwitting buyer who had no idea and had nothing to do with the original crime.
